A top of the line camera with great features! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The camera is great! The picture quality is stellar. It is easy to use too! Unlike most other cameras, the on board menu options give you a description of what every option does - taking the guess work out the equation. It has excellent optical zoom that is better than average for its size and it is far better than my previous Canon PowerShot A640. As an added feature, you can shoot movies in HD. This is the best point in shoot that I have ever owned. The only thing it lacks is the ability to zoom while shooting a movie and the ability to rotate the pictures to fit the screen while in playback mode (unlike my old Canon). While this item was a refurb, it looks and operates like it is brand spanking new. A great buy for anyone who is looking for a higher end compact point-and-shoot camera. I would highly recommend it in comparison to any other camera in its class (including any of the Canons). Last, don't just take my word for it - [...]

A Good Entry Level Camera 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The Cybershot S series has always been considered the "budget" series and the S950, along with the S930 and S980 is the latest addition to the Sony Cybershot series for those who is out to get a compact Sony Camera but doesn't wish to part with a big wad of cash in the process.

The S950, like its 12 megapixel sibling S980, runs on a (new) proprietary Sony Lithium ion battery. The camera is remarkably light, and small, which is about the size of a cigarette box. The design of the camera chassis is minimalist and respectable, with the front surface of the camera covered with a layer of brushed steel.

The focal length of the camera runs from 33m-132mm (35mm equivalent), which is odd but generally would not bother first time users who are out to get a decent zoom compact. The camera lens is a non-Carl-Zeiss, Sony lens, to keep the price of the camera low.

The sensor's diagonal dimension is 1/2.33", and packs enough photosite to deliver 10.1 megapixel worth of images. One important thing to note is that the S950 does not come with a BIONZ processor, which provides faster camera response and better image processing on most expensive Sony Cybershot models. As such, the S950 suffers from below average (by Sony's Cybershot standard) operation response, and can sometimes be downright sluggish.

However, that is not to say that the S950 is a bad camera. Do bare in mind that this is a very cheap compact camera that offers an amazing resolution of 10.1 megapixel, and the operation software that comes with the camera is on par with those of the more expensive cybershot models. Features such as Super Steadyshot, Face Dectection, Scene Mode, P Mode and Easy mode are included to make shooting pictures with this camera a breeze for first time users.

The quality of the image (at full zoom) is acceptable between ISO 100 and ISO 200, but starts to degrate dramatically from ISO 400 onwards. At ISO 3200, there is just too much noise from the sensor and too much aggresive noise reduction going on inside the camera to give you anything useful for printing beyond A5 size.

The camera has been tested under different kinds of harsh flourescent lighting, and produced wonderful results thanks to its extensive white balance program. Given the fact that the camera is prone to produce noise at almost any sensitivity setting beyond the base ISO (100), this camera works best when shooting outdoor in broad daylight. It also works well for still life photography, and takes decent scenic pictures due to its wide aperture.

Examples of images taken under different conditions have been uploaded under customer's images.

Very cool camera 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The pictures from this camera are very clear, and the touch screen is a nice feature. The one thing I would recommend is that you buy memory, as the internal memory in the camera is extremely low.The high resolution of the pictures take up a lot of space. This camera is very tiny so I could see how some people complained about the touch screen but I have normal sized fingers and got the hang of it quickly. The camera is slightly larger than a Motorola razor, is very thin and ultra portable, but it seems that a drop could demolish it. But all things aside I am very pleased with it. if you are looking for something that can take abuse try the Olympus stylus tough 8000 I hear that it can take abuse like a UFC fighter. The Sony how ever has excellent picture quality, and is very easy to use and carry around. I gave it four stars because it does not seem like it could survive abuse, so I would not recommend this for a child. But if you would like a cool high resolution camera with a good lens and lots of little practical design features for under 300 dollars this is great.

Solid Affordable Camera 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I have had a succession of Sony's and currently use the DSCH50 and a pocket sized Cybershot DSCW5 as a constant companion.

The DSCH50 is an excellent product with a large tiltable LCD screen, excellent lens quality, a more than adequate 15 x optical zoom and a pretty hefty 9.1 megapixels. The image stabilization system works very well as does the night mode for taking shots in limited light without flash. I have also been impressed with the performance of the Macro mode, especially as I like to photograph flowers.

I have been delighted with picture quality which is superb for this price point. The ability to use up to a 16mb card also gives more than enough capacity for my needs.

The unit is well constructed, very intuitive to use (this could be because I have had several Sony cameras) and the ergonomics are excellent. There are several modes from fully automatic point and shoot through to almost fully manual operation which gives the user a wide range of artistic options if required.

On the negative side it is a little large (although not heavy) but still way more manageable than an SLR. The LCD is poor in bright sunlight in common with most of the digital cameras I have used. I also found some of the features such as smile capture a tad gimmicky for my taste.

In conclusion I am very pleased with my latest Sony camera. I think this is an excellent unit for someone who wants high quality shots, a good zoom range, but doesn't want to or can't step out for an SLR. A serious camera at a great price point.

Good value for the money, poor image stabilization 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

My only issue with this camera is Image Stabilization, it isn't as good as Canon's. I bought the camera for it's features, 12 megapixels and HD quality Video. Image Stabilization is a big issue for me, my hands shake. My existing camera, a Canon with IS, handled this issue very well. The Sony did not. When taking video it was very jittery, even with IS on. The Canon doesn't have that problem, so I can only assume it's more affective at dealing with the problem. If IS isn't an issue for you then this is a great value for the money, nothing else comes close to it's still image and video resolution for the price.

Very Grainy Video 2 out of 5 stars.
5 of 8 people found this review helpful.

The photos were fine (true skin tones and good low light colors) but the video is very very grainy at all three video settings. The zoom is not the sharpest but is decent. I am going to return it. Very disappointing about the lack of video quality because everything else about this camera was great (easy to use, intuitive, nice menus, good photos).

FOLLOW UP: I actually returned the camera for a new one hoping the poor video quality was just an anomoly in the first camera. No, the video was just as poor in the replacement camera. I can actually see each pixel move when viewing the videos on the computer. The video's look fine on the camera when using the play back/review feature but on the larger screen of a computer, the actual pixels are visible making the video look grainy and poor. It is horrible. I am going to return this second camera and try the Cannon SD1200is.

1st personally owned camera from Sony - Worthit! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I bought mine last week and it arrived 2 days ago. By the time i got the camera, I tested it immediately and had a couple of shots. This is my first personal camera and I am really enjoying it a lot. We had a lot of cameras before but my dad/mom owns it and most of them were Sony and I'm just borrowing. This is one of the best Sony's P&S camera in my opinion.

At first, I was planning to get a DSLR or just the DSC-H50 but I am not feeling the bulky cameras as of the moment. I travel a lot and I don't think I want to bring those bulky and heavy gadgets with me. So, I did some research for a good camera specifications (that are small enough) and I ended up choosing between the Canon SD960 and this one (DSC-H20). Both of them almost have the same specs but the Canon camera is a little bit more expensive than H20. Also, I'm looking for a camera with better optical zoom and Sony-H20 offers twice the zoom strength as the Canon model that I am aiming for.

What I like about it:
- The HD quality video that it can take PLUS you can zoom while recording.
- It's like a mini-dslr because you can switch it to Manual mode and you can adjust the aperture and shutter speed so you can do panning as well. A small camera that really works.. what can I say?
- I love doing Bokeh and Macro shots!!! A+++
- The features such as SCN, editing in camera etc.
- The built and grip! Eventhough the body is made out of plastic, you can feel that it's tough and you can hold it really tight.
- The smile shutter - works well for the Kids..
- Ofcourse, the optical zoom.
- The strong flash

What I don't like:
- No viewfinder
- Popping out of flash, if you're not aware/forgot that you're going take a shot with a flash on/auto.
- Lens cap - you tend to forget that it's there and may block the lens from popping out when you open your camera. It's a little bit annoying and it gives me the feeling that it might break my camera. Though it says that you should remove the cap and turn off your unit and turn it on again, before it works.

Well, overall it's a great small camera and very worthit for its price. The cons I listed are not pretty much of a big deal especially when you see the crisp brilliant photos that you can take with DSC-H20. I bet you're going to love it too and it's worthit worthit and worthit!

I bought the camera with the following stuffs: Sony 8gb mark 2 pro duo memory card, the sony pouch and a tripod.

Memories 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I havae a small digital camera that takes good pictures but I wanted one that would get me some close-up shots during football games that my son plays in. I researched several cameras and lenses from various manufacturers and sellers. I finally decided to go with the package that Amazon was offering. I do not regret the decision. I am no professional by any means, but the camera makes the pictures seem like I am. I am still learning some of the different functions on the camera, but they are not that hard to learn and in time I will have a handle on them. As an extra bonus, the camera actually arrived earlier than anticipated. Very happy with the camera, lenses, and the delivery.

Software Beware! Love the camera though... 4 out of 5 stars.

I love the camera....fun to use and learn....takes great pictures!
Thankfully you don't need the software that comes with it because it crashed my computer. I had to restore...but it let me restore it to a point before I installed the Sony Software so I didn't lose anything... anyone else have problems with the software? Is there a fix?

The 7.2-Megapixel Cyber-shot(R) W120 features innovative Smile Shutter technology, which photographs smiles as they happen. A Carl Zeiss 4x optical zoom lens provides high quality close-ups, while Sony's Double Anti-Blur solution gives you crisp, clear images. The advanced Sony Super HAD(TM) (Hole Accumulated Diode) CCD design allows more light to pass to each pixel, increasing sensitivity and reducing noise. Because an off-center subject can make your shot more interesting, a 9-point auto focus measures the focus at 9 precision points instead of 5 giving you greater creative freedom to compose your image. The large, bright 2.5" TFT LCD display makes it easy to compose shots, check results, and read menus in sharp natural color, even in bright sunlight. Face Detection technology automatically controls focus, exposure, color, and flash to help reveal faces in shadows, make skin tones look more natural, reduce red-eye, and eliminate harsh facial glare, so your photos bring out every expression on every face in every shot. Super SteadyShot(R) Image Stabilization compensates for shaky hands and minimizes blur with optical sensors that detect camera movement and send correcting signals to a stabilization lens. Greatly Disappointed 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Before we go any further, I would like to mention that this review will primarily look at the camera's video capabilities as I was hoping to combine a 720p HD pocket video camera with a digital still camera. Alas, this was not to be.

Pros:
- Ultra-compact size, VERY pocketable
- Fixed lens with 4X zoom
- Capable of zooming while recording (surprisingly, this is rare)
- Capable of adjusting focus while recording (also surprisingly rare)
- Optical image stabilization
- Large, high-res 3.5" LCD screen
- Touchscreen menu system (I was surprised to find that I did like it)

Cons:
- Proprietary data connector instead of mini-USB and mini-HDMI
- Requires use of camera dock for USB and HDMI connections
- Uses proprietary Sony MemoryStick instead of more readily available SD/SDHC
- Lens is prone to significant chromatic aberration, or purple fringing. In cases where the sun or a bright point source of light is in or near the visible frame, you will get a bright purple streak across the image.
- Colors are washed out compared to actual colors
- Low light performance is really bad due to the max aperture of F=3.5
- Only two focusing options in video mode: Auto and Infinity. Auto results in a soft focus or focus hunting, and Infinity increases the minimum focusing distance, which makes it tough to record an 18 month old who like to stay up real close. A single-point focus option would be really nice or even the ability to select a focus area by touching the screen like in still picture mode.
- Battery life seemed to be around an hour with taking test shots, downloading, taking more test shots, downloading, etc. Would be nice to have an AC adapter. Would definitely recommend extra batts.
- Connecting and downloading files to a Mac required setting the camera's USB mode to "Mass Storage" instead of Auto. In Auto mode, the files would not copy via Finder nor could they be viewed directly from the MemoryStick. iMovie would copy them, but they would be corrupted. Changing to "Mass Storage" mode resolved this issue. I'm guessing the included Windows software somehow helps the handshaking. Sony needs to design this to work regardless of OS.

I was primarily comparing this the T900's video capabilities against the lower priced MinoHD and Sanyo Xacti VPC-CG10. The T900 is most comparable to the Xacti, but the Xacti's picture quality in daylight shots was visibly sharper and had much better color even though it was a bit over saturated. The MinoHD probably has the truest color reproduction, and the Sony is still significantly washed out comparatively. Considering that this camera is $180 more than the Xacti and the MinoHD, I would expect its picture to blow the them both away. It did not. If anything, it only managed to match them in some cases, but in others, it could not even do that. The washed out color was bad enough, but the chromatic aberration was too much to ignore.

I really wanted to like this camera as I've loved my DSC-T7, but it just doesn't pass muster. If you want to see exactly what I'm talking about, you can see my comparison videos at[...]

I did take a few still pictures for comparison with the Xacti's 10MP capabilities, and again, the Xacti held its ground. The T900's still pictures were victim to the same poor color reproduction and chromatic aberration.
