When I bought this camera, I kept in mind the low price tag and obviously the size and mobility of this thing. I ski, skateboard and surf, and this camera seemed ideal for catching footage that wouldn't be possible any other way (without spending a lot of money on a nicer camera and waterproof/shock proof casing). While the ski season is over, and I haven't gotten a chance to surf or ski with it yet, I have tested the waterproof casing and have taking lots of skating footage. The pictures come out alright, but don't expect anything to great. The colors can be off given the lighting, and the detail somehow doesn't quite look like 3 gigapixels. The case is waterproof as long as you clean the o-ring that helps seal the housing. The video mode is indeed the best quality of the
Go-Pro 3, as it gives relatively clean footage and the mic catches voices and loud noises. It records in AVI, and 55 minutes fits on a 2GB SD. The footage is nice looking, although I get a lot of frames where there are black squares that appear when I move the camera too violently or switch from dark to light quickly, or vice versa.
One of the biggest concerns I had before buying it, is that people had complained about the battery life. With NiMH rechargeable batteries full charged, the battery lasted more than an hour shooting regular shots. The longest video I'm gotten to record is 40 minutes. I'm sure it can record longer, I just haven't yet exhausted the batteries by recording videos. Lots of reviews online claim the camera only takes up to 5 minutes of footage before it kills the batteries. THIS IS A LIE. If you use the recommended batteries, and charge them before you use them, it has GREAT battery life!
Given the price tag and convenience of the Digital Hero 3, I would consider it a great buy! It does not by any means replace my real camera which I use for sightseeing, portraits, etc., but is very useful for water/extreme sports!

I bought this camera after doing plenty of research and previously owning an Olympus camera. Well, it seems the 5 year old Olympus worked better than this one.
I hate this camera! If you are shooting outdoors with plenty of light or macro pictures, your shots will probably come out alright.
Any pictures I have taken indoors, in low light with a flash come out looking grainy, and several look blurry, even though I have image stabilizer turned on. The image stabilizer doesn't appear to do anything.
The zoom is also horrible, and all the picture I have used zoom on have turned out grainy.
I'm very disappointed, especially considering I paid [...] for this camera. I think I'm going to buy a Canon to replace it.

Great little camera, easy to thrown in a pocket and take with you. The wide angle lens really comes in handy; the main reason that I choose this camera. The colors really seem to pop in the pictures that I have taken so far, very easy to learn and use camera.

I was a little nervous to purchase this camera due to some reviewers who had obviously purchased faulty (leaky) cameras.
I am happy to say that this camera took fabulous underwater shots on my recent cruise to the Bahamas. The shots are clear and perfectly focused.
I knew going in that the optical zoom was not great, but I bought it specifically for the water resistance and am not disappointed.
Another plus is that you can use it straight out of the box - charge up the battery, purchase a card and start shooting. No need to read the manual first.
You do, however, need to submerge the camera in fresh water after taking underwater photos. As I was at the beach, I simply poured drinking water over the camera and set it in the shade to dry. I submerged it in fresh water later back on the ship.
Simple to use, great underwater shots, great in motion shots, good price.

This is a great camera if you use it within its limits. I read a lot of complaints about the auto focus in low light or extended zoom photos. IMHO, if you take that many photos in low light, or at 18 X ( 503mm) you should not be using this camera. This camera takes excellent photos, even at 18x with good lighting, if you are faced with a low light situation at 18X, you should probably have this on a tripod, and give the camera time to focus,or better yet, use manual focus. I will take a decent photo at 18X, but again you are at the upper limit of what it was designed to do. My car is designed to run at 115 mph at times. Would I do that all the time, no. It operates better at 65-85 mph, same concept with your camera.
I bought this camera to take on recent trip to Europe and did not want to haul my DSLR and a couple of lenses. With that in mind, this camera did a great job of being an all around all purpose camera, and even did a good job on some long range shots. I even got good shots of the London Symphony Orchestra at night, at Barbicon from about 700 feet back in upper level seats.
The pictures can get a little noisy at 1600 ISO, but I have other cameras that will not even operate at 1600 ISO.
My only complaints, and biggest concerns with this camera are the USB port, and battery life indicator. You cannot use a standard USB cable with the camera. This must be a recent change for Olympus. I have several other olys that use the Standard USB mini jack. Now, you are forced to keep track of another cable.
Secondly,the battery life in this camera is great, I was able to shoot well over 600 shots,even using image stabilation on one set of AAs. However, the battery indicator is pretty much useless. Several times, I was shooting and the battery indicator showed full power, and after 2 or 3 more shots, the LCD flashed "battery empty." The indicator,does not give you time to plan your battery changes. In one case, the batteries during the LSO concert and it was too dark make a quick battery change. I had to use a second camera.
There are some complaints too about the XD card, but I knew about the XD card requirement before I bought the camera, so that was not an issue for me.
Even, with the downsides, this camera takes great photos under the right conditions. Yes, I did get some bad shots too, but I don't blame the camera. Sometimes, I just missed the shot, or shot before the camera was ready.
I own a high end Nikon camera too, but I still prefer the shots that come from my Olympus cameras for overall picture quality. I have a couple of friends that always say, the photos look 3D out of the Olympus cameras, especially out of my C-8080 Zoom and my C-60.
I probably would buy the 570UZ if this was my only camera. I bought the 550 because it was relatively inexpensive and I didn't think I would be heartbroken if it was lost or damaged while on vacation. Now, that I have used it, it quickly becomming one my favorite cameras.

Great camera! I've Had Several olympus cameras analog and digital. The 560 ultra zoom does it all. Just finished ordering a high speed memory card for this camera so I can take better action shots. This Camera is well worth the money.
