The 10.1 megapixel Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50 features a powerful f2.8 Leica DC lens with 12x optical zoom. The lens focal length is equivalent to 35-420mm on a 35mm film camera and is enhanced by Mega Optical Image Stabilizer (O.I.S.) system. The DMC-FZ50's 10.1-megapixel high resolution CCD for its image sensor and Venus Engine III for the image processing LSI makes it possible to record a image at maximum ISO 1600 high sensitivity setting at full resolution. High Resolution - Wide Angle 5 out of 5 stars.

Have used this camera for about two months and find nothing to complain about. It produces nice wide-angle pictures that capture lots of details so you can zoom in on the PC and crop and re-frame if you like. I decided on it because of the resolution, 28MM wide-angle; and the deciding factor was the large CCD area(not LCD), compared to the FX35 which is much smaller(dont know why). I bought the camera with interest in creating panoramic pictures. It easily produces them with the included software, although a tripod is really needed to get it right. I can take about 600 12Megapixel pictures on just 1 4GB SDHC card. The lith-ion battery easily lasts me for 300 pictures, if I turn it off when not using -- I havent used the flash much. It also has a power-saver mode which basically turns the display off after ten seconds. A great feature, also found on other cameras, is the audio-on. On this model it allows you to record a 5-second detail description of the picture to help you identify it later. It stores it in a quicktime file, that has the same file name as the picture.

Having used the fz18 model for while, i had a chance to look at this model a few days ago. While i did not use it for more than a few hours i managed top get a nice handle on it. The camera is designed to be do everything ok but master nothing. To master everything is probably not realistic since you do not have the luxury of DSLR lenses for everything length. I think i will mention my likes and dislike.

Likes:
1. video mode is very good, video is clean and has decent sound.
2. good image quality, even at 12x+(must use tripod for anything after 12x)
3. Nice lcd screen
4. good battery like. i shot about 400 shots before they were depleted.

Dislikes:
1. still too heavy to use for macro, must have a tripod
2. as light dissapears so does the qualify of the evening shots.
3. flash is a bit weak

overall, i think if you have used these type of models (with 12x+ lenses) you will not find anything earth shattering. but you will enjoy the new upgrade.
