Good overall camera 3 out of 5 stars.

I purchased this camera with my summer trips in mind. I picked it mainly because of the price - I'm not a real camera junkie. I found that on the whole it operates very well. The only problem I have is that it tends to get blurry in action shots, or if you zoom in too close. I also found that my sister, who has a Nikon camera, has pictures that are sharper and have a better quality. For the price, though, you can't get a better camera.

It is almost as small as the Olympus XA2 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought this camera after my hospital decided to go to a digital camera for wound documentation, after polaroid decided to quit making instant film for its cameras. The camera they decided to adopt was this one. I had my doubts, but after having used it, I really started to like it, and bought one for myself. It is compact, uses AA batteries, and has a supermacro feature. The only bad thing is that there is no flash, or I haven't figured out how to use the flash while doing supermacro. Without a tripod, and no flash, not all of the shots could be held still enough in supermacro for sharp shots. I finally figured out how to use a LED pen flashlight to provide enough light for faster shutters peeds in super macro handheld shots. The images are clear and sharp. From Amazon I took advantage of the 2 GB SD card for free. I have yet to fill one up. This is the camera that goes with me all of the time. A great camera for not so much dough for those of us that like macro shots.

I BOUGHT A CANON POWERSHOT SX100IS FOR $223.00 Dlls.THROUGH AMAZON.COM, FROM 17th.Street Photo AND IT WAS A GREEN LEMON AND A RIP=OFF BECAUSE THE ZOOM WAS DEFECTIVE AND NEVER WAS ABLE TO GET A CLEAR PICTURE......ALWAYS BLURRED!!! AND UPON TRYING TO USE THE ZOOM...THE LENS RETRACTION WOULD GET STUCK AND A MESSAGE KEPT APPEARING ON THE LCD....."lens error......restart the camera"....
1.- My order was placed from Mexico to Amazon on June 27, together with another ten different items which arrived at my daughter's home in Denver by July 7....
2.- I arrived at my daughter's for a month vacation on sunday july 20th, and upon checking my items ordered, I noticed the deffective CANON CAMERA and reported it to the vendor 17TH STREET PHOTO who never answered my complaints and my desired to send it back and exchange it for another BETTER BRAND like PANASONIC LUMIX TZ5K or something equivalent and willing to pay for the difference....
3.-After almost three weeks of complaints to Amazon.com and 17th Street Photo I HAVE NOT HAD A SINGLE ANSWER TO OFFER ME AN HONEST AND ADEQUATE OPTION FOR SOLVING MY PROBLEM......

Chic, simple. Canon looked to the very first ELPH for inspiration when designing the PowerShot SD1000 Digital ELPH, and came up with a quintessential iteration of the icon: slim, clean-lined and fully flat. Great Camera, Based on First 1500 Photos 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Advantages:
1. Small, Lightweight, Pocket Size
No excuse to not take it with you. Excellent for travel. Never miss a photo.

2. Excellent Picture Quality
High resolution; can crop image and maintain detail.

3. Real Image Viewfinder
Great for action shots e.g. panning kids sledding on a snow covered hill. Viewfinder is great for photographing in bright sunlight when the LCD is difficult to see. Camera is always more stable, less blur, when using viewfinder vs. LCD screen.

Must Have Accessories:
Buy a 2 or 4 GB SD card. Get a small, Samsonite zippered case ($ 8) to protect the camera while traveling with camera in your trouser or jacket pocket.

Features You Have to Learn to Use:

Auto setting for everyday photos

Night setting for flash photos of people in low light buildings. If not set to Night, the background is dark/black = high contrast. Setting to Night lightens the background scenery = better contrast

CM manual settings:
Set color to Positive Film for rich, saturated colors

Reduce exposure for sunsets

Portrait setting = soft effect for portraits

Photostitch = essential for pictures of landscapes, wide buildings, etc.

How to Zoom Beyond 3X Optical Zoom:
Don't use Digital Zoom. Turn it off on the menu unless you want crappy, low resolution photos. Instead, take very sharp, highest resolution photos. For outdoor photos in bright light, use CM manual setting with ISO set to 80, and SuperFine, Large files. This will produce the sharpest, highest resolution photo. The jpg file is larger and sharper than you'll ever need. Use software to "zoom" 2 or 3x by enlarging and cropping the photo. It's like having a camera with a 6X optical zoom lens.

Limitations:
1. The major limitation is low light photography. The camera sensor cannot collect enough light to take excellent pictures in low lighting such as in a cathedral. The high ISO settings produce poor quality, very grainy pictures. If you carry a tripod or monopod, you could overcome this limitation. But who does that with a pocket camera?

2) Flash is for relatively short distances, but it's good enough for family photos.

3) The wrist strap has hard plastic sections. The hard plastic can press against the LCD screen while the camera is in your pocket and permanently damage the screen.

4) There is NO pocket-sized (credit card sized) documentation listing all the menu options, at least the frequently used settings.

Conclusion:
Overall, it's an extremely powerful, low priced, extremely versatile camera packaged into a tiny, lightweight case. It takes great photos. You can't go wrong with this camera. A slightly better camera with Image Stabilization for better, hand held, low-light photos is the new Powershot SD1100. Image stabilization is a must have if you want to take photos in cathedrals, museums, etc. I bought the SD1100 for my wife.
