A Tale of Three Treasures! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This review is a combination of three:

Canon PowerShot SD950IS 12.1MP (Titanium)
Canon PowerShot SD770IS 10MP
Canon PowerShot SD790IS 10MP

I first purchased the Canon SD950, and after loonnnggg shipping from Jr.com, I received it and tried it out. The camera is much bigger than the SD500 that I upgraded from--even though it's got so many bells and whistles. One thing about Canon that's got my eyebrow raised: Why the big font as if we can't read?

The Image Stabilization is a wonderful thing, right along with the face detection. It even focused on an enlarged print of a little girl! The 3.7 zoom is nothing to frown at either. ISO is easier to set now so one can play around with the settings...

The camera is made for "big hands" and it took me about two weeks of off and on shooting to get used to it. The 12MP quality is okay, and I didn't have to get used to too much new button placement. One thing I didn't like is the play button. I felt I had to really push my finger on the play button in order to view my photos. It annoyed me enough to see what else was out there.

The Canons SD770 and SD790 were next on my list. Even though they were "only" 10MP, they had newer technology from Canon: Motion Detection and Infinity and cute buttons in all new small packages.

SD770IS(Silver)
First the SD770. This was a nice small camera! Not cheap feeling at all, Canon packed everything but the kitchen sink in there. I like the "Infinity" setting that the SD950 didn't have. Also, I have the silver version and it's nice, small, sleek, and takes great pictures. I didn't like the way the battery cover was not spring loaded. Also, either it was this particular camera or the 770 in general, but it seemed like I had to "dig" for the battery and SDHC card once put in. Yes, it's compact, hefty, and full of bells and whistles, but it was...kinda boring. Maybe because the silver color didn't have the pizazz of the black version that I'd read reviews on. Moving on to the SD790...

SD790IS
Bigger camera! Compared to the 770, it's a giant! The same size as the 950 except in a square/cube like form. The 950 is curvy, while the 790 is sleek and boxy (not sure if that's an oxymoron or not!). The 790 also has a new button format that I'm not sure if I like or not. I really enjoyed the SD500's button placement and while I can appreciate a "play" button...why not make it easy access instead of having to constantly press the button down? I'm thinking that the play buttons will eventually wear out. The big screen is nice, and even though I haven't used a viewfinder since...ever, it would be nice to "just have". So the lack of a viewfinder is a potential bummer. You never know when you gotta smear your nose on the photo screen to take pic! lol Also, the 790 is a fingerprint magnet.

I tried to take the same pictures with all the cameras, but couldn't always (morning/evening, different zoom, etc.). Both the 770 and 790 have high ISO settings (as did the 950), but I didn't even use anything that high previously! All the pictures came out great. Even my crappy pictures of my messy coffee table were clear and colorful! One issue I had with all three cameras was the color accent setting. It seemed as if I got better black and white/one color photos from my SD500 than either of these cameras. I have to do a lot more tweaking. However, it could be just because of the balances of the colors and the lighting effects in my environment.

If I just had to choose based on portability, photos, looks, bells/whistles, ease of use, I would go crazy trying to decide, but finally take the Canon SD770 because it's smaller. The thing that keeps me wondering about the 770 is, "how can they fit all these specs in this TINY camera!?? But, I'm a sucker for good looks, so the scale points back to the 790! True it's bigger, but it's still small considering the screen. I always take great care of my electronics, so I'm not so worried about fingerprints. If the button issue upsets me extremely, then I'll just upgrade to Canon's latest and greatest in 6-8 months.

Either way, can't wait to take pics on the new SD790. Get out, purchase any of these cams and you'd be satisfied.

1.- My order was placed from Mexico to Amazon on June 27, together with another ten different items which arrived at my daughter's home in Denver by July 7....
2.- I arrived at my daughter's for a month vacation on sunday july 20th, and upon checking my items ordered, I noticed the deffective CANON CAMERA and reported it to the vendor 17TH STREET PHOTO who never answered my complaints and my desired to send it back and exchange it for another BETTER BRAND like PANASONIC LUMIX TZ5K or something equivalent and willing to pay for the difference....

Awesome Camera 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I decided to get into photography around May of '08. I surfed the net for hours on end(It's something I do) and went through dozens of reviews and comparisons for dSLRs. I came to the conclusion that the XTI was the best camera and offered the most bang for the buck.

I bought this with the 18-55mm kit, and also purchased the 50mm f/1.8 prime lens. Amazing.

Picture quality is AWESOME! There is so much versatility with this camera compared to a point and shoot. Obviously the XTI isn't something I want to lug around to a party or the pool hall to take photos of friends, but it's perfect for portraits and landscapes(all I've done so far).

I've gotten some really really good photos out of this camera. The Photos are fairly sharp if you hold it(almost perfect with tripod and self timer) and I can only brag about owning one. Great job Canon. Thanks!

Good overall camera 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this camera with my summer trips in mind. I picked it mainly because of the price - I'm not a real camera junkie. I found that on the whole it operates very well. The only problem I have is that it tends to get blurry in action shots, or if you zoom in too close. I also found that my sister, who has a Nikon camera, has pictures that are sharper and have a better quality. For the price, though, you can't get a better camera.

It is almost as small as the Olympus XA2 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought this camera after my hospital decided to go to a digital camera for wound documentation, after polaroid decided to quit making instant film for its cameras. The camera they decided to adopt was this one. I had my doubts, but after having used it, I really started to like it, and bought one for myself. It is compact, uses AA batteries, and has a supermacro feature. The only bad thing is that there is no flash, or I haven't figured out how to use the flash while doing supermacro. Without a tripod, and no flash, not all of the shots could be held still enough in supermacro for sharp shots. I finally figured out how to use a LED pen flashlight to provide enough light for faster shutters peeds in super macro handheld shots. The images are clear and sharp. From Amazon I took advantage of the 2 GB SD card for free. I have yet to fill one up. This is the camera that goes with me all of the time. A great camera for not so much dough for those of us that like macro shots.

A great little camera and a Consumer Reports "best buy"! 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I got this camera for Christmas. It is great for most types of photos. Consumer Reports recently listed this camera as a "best buy". Its predecessor, the A710, had also been a best buy. Canon seems to update their cameras every year, so my guess is that this camera's successor is due to be released within the next few months.

If you just want a point-and-shoot that does all the work for you, then keep this camera in "auto" mode and forget about all the other settings. If you are an experienced SLR photographer, go ahead and put it in manual mode for a near-SLR experience.

I have noticed that the lens does tend to slightly, but noticeably, curve straight vertical lines. Also, as with most point-and-shoot cameras, while the LCD screen is WYSIWYG, the viewfinder is not--especially when zoomed in.

Remember that for ALL auto-focus cameras, you should press the shutter button down half way so the camera can focus on the subject. Then press the shutter button down all the way to take the shot. This is no different than other point-and-shoot digital cameras.

One reviewer complained about getting blurry photos with this camera. I have not had any problems with blurry photos. If you have a broadband Internet connection, I have posted 433 photos online that I took with this camera during a recent vacation to Japan. As you will see, there are no blurry photos. To see the quality of the pictures that this camera takes, go to http://picasaweb.google.com/jparsons.net/

Recommended supplies: I bought the Tamrac 5290 Camera Bag for it, which holds the camera snugly and does a good job of protecting it from rain. If you would like to improve your photography skills, I recommend the book Understanding Exposure.

Editorial Review:

The PowerShot A720 IS is the quintessential A Series camera in a popular line that matches high-end image quality with fun, easy-to-use features that deliver excellent cost performance. Top-notch specifications include 8.0 megapixel resolution and a long 6x optical zoom with Optical Image Stabilizer technology for sharp images throughout the zoom range. Canon's DIGIC III Image Processor offers advanced Face Detection technology and Red-eye Correction for fantastic images. Even expand your creative possibilities with wide-angle and telephoto converter lenses.

Love the camera, it's so easy to use. The display is crystal clear and the colors are amazing. The camera is great in sunlight with the manual viewfinder. It's just a great little camera!!!!

Totally Happy with this Purchase! 5 out of 5 stars.

I've been testing and looking at cameras in this price range for weeks, and although you can get more megapixels for the price in other brands, don't do it! This one easily beats out EVERY other model in this price range. Compared to a 10 megapixel Fujifilm camera, this 8 megapixel camera takes FAR better pictures, with finer detail, and better quality all around.

Also, this camera takes phenomenal macro shots, has excellent response time, and it's totally sleek & cute. I highly recommend this camera!

Great Cheap Camera 4 out of 5 stars.

Keeping this review simple, the camera was a present for my younger brother. I am one of those people who research and research and research some more. With Price in mind an older camera was needed. Canon has always been known for its picture quality. Although this camera does not have 5x optical zoom and image stability, all the other features are top quality. for this price range you can't get anything better.

Canon's iconic ELPH design achieves a stunning new evolution with the PowerShot SD750 Digital ELPH. Utterly simple edge lines and cut surfaces gleam subtly with high-grade finishes. Of course, style means little without substance, and here the SD750 Digital ELPH more than delivers. 7.1 megapixels and DIGIC III create magnificent images, while exciting advanced technologies include Face Detection, Red-eye Correction, and time-lapse movies. Always sized to go, the SD750 Digital ELPH is now extra-durable, with a tough scratch-resistant coating on its anti-reflective, brilliantly colorful 3.0-inch LCD screen.
