Least Expensive Media in Digital Cameras - Great 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

The Sony Mavica series started it all with the Floppy disk Cameras ( that are still the most popular camera for internet pictures.)
Starting with the Mavica MVC CD1000 20X Zoom Sony did it again..
Mini Compact disks, the CD1000 could only use read only disks - CD-Rs.
With the CD200 Sony set real lead in Media with a camera that uses CD-R and rewriteable CD-RW disks. General Cost 50 cents for a CD-R and $2 bucks for a rewriteable CD-RW.
Using the Small ring in CDrom drives the mini CDs work just like a normal full sized CD. Capacity from 150 to 220 Megabits, or 200 to 2500 pictures depending on your selected resolution for each picture.
With all the newer operating systems XP ect the Camera Scanner wizards and viewers make it Childs play to download pictures and look at them. The camera is easy to use, anyone can pick it up and soon be taking digital pictures.
The entire series of Mavica MVC CDs are great.. with the CD500 at 5 megapixels with upgraded Lazers and CCDs is the top of the line.

Editorial Review:

The Sony DSCF505 Digital Still Camera offers an impressive array of features: It uses Sony's Memory Stick storage medium. Equipped with a Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar lens, the Sony DSCF505 offers 5x optical and 10x digital zoom capabilities. With resolution of 1,600 x 1,200 pixels, a 0.5-inch Super HAD CCD (charge coupled device), a pop-up automatic flash, and a 2-inch hybrid LCD with brightness control, the Sony DSCF505's features put it among the ranks of other high-end digital cameras. The automatic or manual options for shutter priority, aperture priority, and white balance give this model much of the artistic flexibility of traditional SLR cameras.

Convenience features include a self-timer and a disk space and battery-remaining indicator so you never unexpectedly run out of storage space or power. It also offers date imprinting and video shooting capacity. The Sony DSCF505 comes with 4 MB removable Memory Stick memory, a rechargeable InfoLithium battery and charger, a shoulder strap, connection cables, and photo editing software.

Tiny, light, and great photos 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I already had a small 7 megapixel camera - a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P200 when I began looking for something smaller. My current camera was the size of a pack of cigarettes, but it was bulky in my purse. I wanted something smaller and lighter. Also, I was going to Hawaii and I wanted something I could snorkel with. My current camera didn't have any matching underwater case to go with it. The DSC-T20 does!

I was already used to having a high quality camera with me all the time, with very fast response to pressing the button. So to be honest even though the DSC-T20 was higher on the megapixel range, I was at first a bit annoyed by its response time. It takes about a half second before it gets the green focus rectangle and lets you take a picture. It might not sound like a lot, but when you're taking pictures on the fly, it can really get to you. With the DSC-P200 I could literally point, click and move the camera again in one movement and the picture would be great. With this one, there was a noticeable lag between wanting to take the picture and having it taken.

Now, that being said, it is SO nice to have this light, easy to carry camera with me. The other one was small - but heavy. This one is much smaller and lighter. I could carry it around with me on my wrist as I went from place to place and it was hardly noticeable at all.

I really liked the fact that the whole front is shielded by a sliding panel, and the camera turns auto-on when you manually slide that panel. It made it very easy to pop it on and off again.

On the other hand, I don't like how they set up the menus. On the old one, a spinning wheel let you instantly switch between camera and video. This was very handy. On this DSC-T20, you have to go paging through a menu in order to move from one to the other. Quite a pain. You can pop between macro mode and flash mode with the easy buttons on the face, which is good and the same - but for some reason the buttons are harder to use. The DSC-P200 had a slightly larger center button, slightly larger side buttons and the buttons were separate pieces. This DSC-T20 has just a single circular unit that is hard to move.

The images seem great. I've used it for large landscapes, tiny origami, faces, and everything in between.

Still, all in all, I am very glad that I got the DSC-T20. Its small size was perfect, and it is great to have an underwater-capable camera. If you want to see photos from this camera, I took over 1,000 photos in Hawaii on my LisaShea.com site. Enjoy!

Editorial Review:

Add a touch of technology to your lifestyle when you accessorize with the DSC-T20 Cyber-shot digital camera. Boasting 8.1 megapixel resolution for greater detail in big prints and tight comps, the DSC-T20 delivers superb clarity to group photos and snapshots. The innovative Carl Zeiss 3X optical zoom lens design brings the action close while the Face Detection feature optimizes natural tones in faces. With HD (high definition) output, photos can look even more spectacular when you share them with friends and family on HDTV screens.

Editorial Review:

The feature-rich Sony DSC-S75 digital camera presents a very plausible replacement for a traditional 35mm film camera. It features a 3.3-megapixel CCD, a superb Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar 3x optical zoom lens, 2x digital zoom (for a 6x total zoom), and other extras such as movie mode and voice recording for annotations.

The DSC-S75 is larger than most of Sony's other Cyber-shot cameras, but it's nicely weighted and benefits from the rubber grip to the left of the lens. The DSC-S75 shares many features with the Sony MVC-CD300, including a variety of modes, such as simultaneous recording of both TIFF and JPEG images, a voice mode that records an audio file of between 5 and 40 seconds together with the still image, and the ability to record both short MPEG movies with sound and animated GIFs. However, unlike the MVC-CD300, the DSC-S75 has only a two-image burst mode and no exposure bracketing feature.

Sony has added some useful features for reviewing and editing images on the camera before they have been uploaded, including a 5x LCD zoom, a slideshow feature, and the ability to enlarge and trim images. You can also divide MPEG movies into two separate files. The DSC-S75 also records the exposure, shutter speed, and aperture setting of each image for later reference.

Playback of images is either via TV by use of supplied AV cable, through a Memory Stick reader (such as the Sony MSACUS1A), or by attaching the camera to the PC via the supplied USB cable. In this last case, the camera is mounted as a new drive on your Mac or PC's desktop, allowing easy transfer of images to the hard drive.

The camera is supplied with an AC adaptor, rechargeable battery pack, 8 MB Memory Stick, AV connecting cable, shoulder strap, a rather short USB cable, and software on CD-ROM. --Nick Baxter

Pros:

  • Good replacement for 35mm SLR
  • Superb Carl Zeiss lens
  • Useful preview options
  • Nice extras, including audio file annotation and MPEG movies with sound

Cons:

  • Only 3x optical zoom
  • Limited to two-image burst mode

Editorial Review:

Sony's affordable DSC-P51 combines a 2-megapixel sensor, 2x zoom lens, and AA battery power in a pocket-sized package. If you're shopping for a family point-and-shoot that's easy to use, versatile, and small enough to take anywhere, the P51 is a great choice.

Optics and Resolution
The DSC-P51's 2-megapixel sensor captures enough detail for sharp prints at sizes up to 8 by 10 inches. For the typical family photographer, 2 megapixels is a great balance between price and performance. If you want a camera with even more resolution, you'll need to step up to a 3- or 4-megapixel model like the DSC-P71 or DSC-P9.

The autofocus lens features both a 2x optical zoom and a 3x digital zoom. Remember, however, that digital zoom tends to reduce the sharpness and detail of your image, so it's a good idea to use it sparingly. In low-light situations (a particular weakness for many digital cameras), a focus-assist lamp sends out a small patterned beam to help the camera accurately determine distance, and special circuitry automatically reduces the "static" that typically plagues nighttime digital shots.

To compose your images, either use the traditional camera viewfinder or the 1.6-inch LCD display (which is also used to review the shots you've taken). Having both types of viewfinders offers the best of both worlds: if you're used to using a film camera or want to conserve battery life, use the viewfinder. If you want to see exactly the picture you'll be capturing, use the LCD display.

More Features
Though the P51 is designed for point-and-shoot simplicity, there are several options for more adventurous photographers, including manual focus with macro, adjustable ISO and white-balance settings, exposure compensation, and the ability to shoot black-and-white, sepia, solarized, and negative images.

Power
The P51 uses two AA batteries--a pair of high-capacity nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) rechargeables and charger are included. The benefit to using standard AA batteries instead of a custom proprietary battery is that AA batteries are widely available, so missing a once-in-a-lifetime shot due to dead batteries won't be an issue. The downside is that a digital camera will kill a set of alkaline batteries extremely quickly, especially if you're using the camera's LCD display. To ensure you'll be ready for action, we recommend getting a second pair of batteries so you can always have one set in the camera and the other set in the charger.

Movie Mode
In movie mode, the camera captures silent video clips. Most digital cameras' movie modes are limited to 15- or 30-second clips, but in EX mode, the P51 can keep shooting until you've filled the memory card. The limited resolution of your movies guarantees that this feature won't replace your camcorder, but it's perfect for when you just want to capture a quick movie and e-mail it to a friend or relative.

Storage and Transfer
Images are stored on Memory Sticks, Sony's proprietary memory-card format. The included 16 MB stick holds approximately 24 images at the camera's default settings. Memory Sticks are reusable, but if you tend to take more than 24 images per outing, then you'll want a bigger card. A 128 MB stick is a great size for this camera, storing around 200 images. To transfer images to your computer, simply attach the included USB cable between your PC and your camera. Your computer should automatically recognize your camera and let you move the pictures to your hard drive. If you own a Sony desktop or laptop, your computer may already have a built-in Memory Stick reader.

Size
At 5 by 2.4 by 1.75 inches and 10.4 ounces fully loaded, the P51 is a very compact and portable digital camera.

Contents and Recommended Accessories
The package includes the DSC-P51 camera, two rechargeable NH-AA-D1 rechargeable batteries, BC-CS1 charger, video and USB cables, wrist strap, 16 MB Memory Stick, and software on CD.

Everything you need to get started is included in the box, but we recommend these accessories to make the most of your camera: a carrying case, a spare set of NiMH rechargeable size AA batteries, and a higher-capacity memory stick. Compatible accessories for this camera are listed near the top of this page.
