The Prosumer SLR Value 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Summary: I'm a very happy owner after 2 months and 3,000 exposures
Pros:
1. Quick, accurate and flexible focus with easy selection of focus points.
2. Very good exposures in difficult light.
3. Rapid and logical access to controls and displays.
4. Flash metering and control, especially with the external 580exII, are superb!
Cons:
1. Custom white balance set-up could be easier.
2. The manual is poor enough that I purchased and aftermarket book on the 40d.
My Rig:
1. 40d body dual battery pack.
2. 17-85 EFS, USM/IS lens
3. 70-200 f2.8L, USM lens
4. 2x Telextender
5. Manfrotto monopod.
6. Lowepro Fastpack 250 backpack w/laptop compartment.
7. 580exII speedlight w/Gary Fong "Whale Tail"
8. 430ex speedlight to use as slave to 580 for fill.
Uses:
1. Girl's fastpitch softball games. These range from bright sun to artificially lit night games.
2. Colorguard and drill team competition. These are often indoors or on field at night.
3. Product photography for high tech semiconductor equipment. This is usually on site vs. in a studio due to equipment size.

Discussion:
I purchased this camera to take over where my Konica-Minolta 5d and Minolta legacy glass left off in my tireless effort to chronicle my kid's lives. The KM5d was not a bad rig, but as the kids got older the action moved too fast for the KM to catch it. The main issues were the focus speed and the shutter speeds allowed by the legacy lenses. Sony Alpha made some of these issues better, but that system only has two fast focus motors - for the 70-200 and one other. It's just very limiting and about 25% more expensive than Canon or Nikon equivalents. So, I decided to change to one of the two big guys. After extensive testing, I settled on the Canon system and the 40d in particular because of the speed of operation (at least in my hands) and the price point for the items I wanted, which ended up being almost $1k less than the Nikon solution based on a D300. Also, the Canon system had lenses that overlapped range where I wanted them to, and this is reflected in the system I carry. Many other reviews split hairs on ISO 3200 performance, and this got me going for a little bit, but the fact is that if you are pushing that hard, the photos are going to be very grainy. Slightly less or more is not the issue, IMHO. Over quite a broad range of conditions, this camera is just great.

So, now I have the equipment performance headroom that my KM was nowhere near providing, and my photography, which did NOT stink previously, has taken a good step up. I get the action shots on a more consistent basis. The slides into second base are spectacular! If you are looking for a step up from the older Canons, or are switching to a system with some breadth like I was, this is a great choice!

Got this camera recently and totally in love with it. Yep, it's not the new modet, but I does alot for the old model.
Also, if you'd like to have something professional, take Canon EOS 5d)

WOW! What a picture Quality 5 out of 5 stars.

By the time, I am writing this review, I have captured more than 10K pictures on this lovely camera. It takes superb pictures. The picture quality is stunning. I highly recommend buying Canon external Flash for better indoor shoots and Canon EF 70-200mm F4L USM lens for stunning pictures. Value for money and once you get used to DSLR, its hard moving back to point and shoot.
Great camera.

Fantastic features...a better camera than a Canon of same class. 5 out of 5 stars.

This camera has a lot of great features. I bought this for my husband for Christmas and he takes it everywhere. It's a great SLR camera. Nikon has a great product here..the quality of the pictures are phenomenal. It's very easy to use and we're so glad we have it to take on our adventures.

This camera is unbeatable.... unless you are a pro photographer YOU WILL LOVE IT!... 5 out of 5 stars.

I will begin by saying that I was very interested in learning more about photography so I bought the Nikon D40 to photograph the family and take occassional scenic photos. I received the camera, charged the battery for about an hour and then began taking the BEST pictures I had ever taken. (200 the first day) I did not change any settings...."auto" all the way. Right out of the box the camera is amazing.

My wife wondered why I wanted a $500 camera and why I just HAD to have the 55-200 VR Lens for $240 more but now I think she would have paid double. With just under two days under our belts there are over 300 pictures on my SDHC card and we are hooked. I cannot say enough great things about this camera and I'm sure as I learn more about photography with a DSLR my opinion will only get better. This is a great investment for the beginning photographer or soccer mom!
Would give 10 stars if I could!!!!!

Great camera for serious photographer 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This is a fantastic camera. I upgraded from D200 and happy that Nikon made the D300. They have changed around many of the menu items I was use to from my D200, but that is worth the better quality when I shoot at higher ISO's. I higly recommend for any serious photographer.

Outstandng camera 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Instant on, immediate take when you push the shutter button, focuses instantly on what you want depending on how you set the focus area, and takes better pictures than my Maxxum 7 did. I currently use only one lens, the 18 - 200; but plan on getting another soon with faster aperture for fine work. I currently use mine for travel when backpacking; but also for pictures in the ER where I work. These I use for teaching purposes for the medical students who rotate with us. A very fine piece of hardware that works as advertised.

So glad I bought this 5 out of 5 stars.

Everyone else has already covered the details, so I'll just add my voice to the chorus. Particularly, I am amazed at the photos shot at ISO3200 and the fact that you can get something truly usable at ISO6400.

Also, the feel of it in your hands is terrific.

Overall a great digital camera. 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this camera for taking still photos so was not concerned with video. On a recent trip to Alaska I used this camera to take pictures of nature scenes, wildlife, and just general pictures. It performed beautifully. The pictures were extremely clear and sharp even when using the digital zoom ranges. I did encounter some issues with the automatic focus not wanting to lock on distant objects but should be able to resolve this once I get used to using the manual focus feature. The one feature of this camera I would like to see changed is the picture card. For myself I have used cameras in the past which use XD cards so I already had the capability to utilize them. I would have preferred it if the camera used the more universal SD cards. Other than that I have been very satisfied with my purchase.

Experience the power of 20x zoom with the SP-570 UZ. This compact 10 Megapixel camera does it all - from wide-angle perspectives to breathtaking close ups. Dual Image Stabilization even ensures images come out blur free. And for high-action moments, this model shoots at up to a whopping 13.5 frames per second in 3 Megapixel mode!

Legacy Lenses OK! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I have been a loyal Pentax customer for the better part of 25 years. My first was a fully manual K1000 from 1981. ( Which by the way is still a great film camera ) I used that camera to fill in the gap in-between great imaging, and quick imaging in which I use a "point and shoot" digital camera for my digital needs.
I have read reviews, and magazine ads waiting for a decent DSLR that can fill my all in one needs, and not fret about having hundreds of dollars of unused lenses, and filters in a case.
Well here it is! Though not really addressed in their ads at any length, The Pentax DSLR will indeed fit and use all their legasy K lenses!
NICE... all my zooms, wide angle, macro's and filters will be useful again in the 21st century. To my knowledge Canon, Olympus, Sony, etc have missed the consumer boat in engineering their cameras to use the lenses current customers already have in their posession. To be sure, the new lenses will allow for automatic metering, and focus. But for someone who already is comfortable in making my own exposures, and focusing, I can use my stock of lenses that were already invested in.
Thank you Pentax!
Oh and yes...ps... this camera does indeed make great images! Have no fear.
