The Nikon D300 was the camera that convinced me to complete my migration from Canon's EOS Digital system. My previous main body was a Canon EOS 20D. I liked that camera, but had become frustrated by its small rear display and lack of a sensor dust-removal system. I have a collection of manual focus Nikkor lenses from my film days, and I tested the Nikon waters a few years ago by purchasing a D40 to experiment with those lenses. Using the manual lenses on the D40 was less than satisfactory (no metering), but I did find myself turning to the D40 regularly over the following months. I preferred its treatment of highlights and noise to that of the Canon - the Nikon approach to image processing undoubtedly results in a more "film-like" result.
Anyway, back to the D300 - The display is gorgeous - HUGE compared to the Canon 20D. The image processing is superb: low noise until ISO 1600, but the noise that is there is not unpleasant (unlike the blotchy results I would get from the Canon at those speeds). The grip feels great in my hand. The viewfinder display is very usable. I don't find myself accidentally adjusting the exposure compensation as I often would on the Canon. Auto-bracketing: check. Matrix metering with AI-S lenses - Woo Hoo!
I could not be happier with this purchase. Great value.

SP-565UZ is a dream camera for me! Great for Genealogy! 5 out of 5 stars.

I owned an 550UZ for 18 months and decided to upgrade to the 565UZ for the extra mega-pixels and other feature differences. I'm an amateur photographer but married to a professional. We originally purchased the 550UZ so that I had a camera that was easy for me to use yet if I wanted to I could override the settings while I learned more about photography from him. First, I have used both cameras extensively for copying pages from books, copying photographs, and snapping microfilm screens in libraries for my genealogical research. With the document mode the camera is in almost the perfect settings. I always use a custom white balance so that I don't have to do ANYTHING to the book photos. I have taught several other genealogists who are not techies to use this camera and set the white balance! The same camera goes immediately outside for tourist pictures with stunning results. Like all AF cameras you have to be aware of where the camera is focusing and make sure you press the shutter button down half way and give the camera time to focus. Many times I get as good shots as my husband's (his still has more pixels!). The extra 2X zoom helps get nicer long shots in focus. My favorite part of working with this camera is being able to swap between outside landscape mode to available light shots to documents within seconds!

I think this camera deserves four stars. I have used at least 10 digital cameras in the past 10 years, not counting the SLRs. At this price, $249, I think what this camera offers is as good as you can get from a pocket camera. There are some pros and cons but the pros far outweigh the cons. I like the A2000's solid feel and weight, unlike the flimsy feel of the most other recent A series, such as my A570is. The pictures are as good as, if not better than, any pocket camera at this price. There are complaints about noise, but again find me better pictures from the same class of cameras.
The features, however, are what please me. I am not going to repeat them since it's on the product description, but the use of AA batteries and 6x zoom are must haves for me. For better pictures quality, I use my SLR, but for pocket convenience, I'll just enjoy this for the time being, until the technology catches up with our unquenchable taste.
