I brought this camera for my daughter and she loves it, I knew she would I also have a canon camera. Just about everyone in my family has one and never had a problem with it. I would highly recommend that you buy this camera, the price is pretty reasonable.

Great first camera 5 out of 5 stars.

I purchased this camera for my 7 year old daughter's birthday and she hasn't stopped taking pictures since we put the batteries in! The controls are so easy that I only looked at the manual after I'd figured everything out. My daughter can also work the camera on her own which was exactly what I was looking for. The other huge plus is that it runs on regualar AA batteries, so replacement is quick and painless. I highly recommend this little beauty to anyone - young, old, or inbetween.

Solid Camera - not perfect, but recommended 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I am about 1,000 images into the new 50D. So far it's been a pleasure. I am switching from a Nikon D200. Nikon, to me, has superior ergonomics - the buttons and functions are so well thought out. Canon works well too but sometimes I feel like I need to be double jointed to change a setting. I do not like the wheel on top; the silver color is not great and it turns to easily. I have switched modes in the middle of shooting and not known it. But, the camera feels solid, the screen is absolutely amazing, the menus are super easy to navigate, the 6 frames per second is impressive. 15 megapixels; well, you only need it if you are printing larger than 20" or so. I've done 26" prints with a 10 megapixel, and if you know what you are doing and use a great printer it's flawless. As for low noise - well, it's low, but I'm not blown away. Remember all your lenses will be 1.6 times their focal length, so it's hard to go wide angle with this camera. But, it's easy to get super tele photo. I use it with the 24-105 L lens, which costs almost as much as the camera is worth it.
This decisions is tricky - it's very solid, I recommend it. But if I were a first time DSLR buyer right now looking at mid-range cameras, Canon has no advantage over Nikon. The D90 is terrific and cheaper, the D300 and D700 are amazing. Why did I switch to Canon? Simply because I like their lenses better on the high end. The Nikon 80-400 is slow as a dog, although sharp. I would much rather have the Canon 100-400 L. Nikon's high end lenses seem to be a little more expensive, and frankly, there are fewer out there so they are harder to find, new or used.

Good luck, happy shooting, this a great camera.

The thrill of photography has returned 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This camera is a pleasure to use. Whether using manual settings or the automatic (ia) setting, the IQ is fantastic. My first Lumix was the FZ-10. It, too, produced amazing shots. Since then, I've had two other cameras in the Lumix lineup. I enjoy both of those, but they've never given me the excitement of the FZ-10. With the LX3, I've found that excitement all over again. The Leica Summicron lens give super sharp, beautifully saturated photos. In short, I love this camera!

Editorial Review:

Designed for easy, creative shooting, and high-performance in low-light conditions, the DMC-LX3 features a F2.0 24mm LEICA DC VARIO-SUMMICRON lens, 10.1 megapixels and an ultra-sensitive 1/1.63-inch CCD developed specifically for this model. By combining a high-quality lens and sensor ready for a variety of shooting conditions with a wide-range of accessories and manual controls, the DMC-LX3 is ideal for professional photographers and serious amateurs looking for a compact digital camera that furthers their creative photography.

Editorial Review:

The Sony DSC-W170 features an enviable 10.1-Megapixel resolution, Carl Zeiss 5x optical zoom lens, and Sony's Double Anti-Blur solution for crisp, clear images with a sophisticated, compact body. A large, bright 2.7" Clear Photo LCD display includes an anti-reflective coating that provides for excellent visibility to help you compose, view, and share photos with superb clarity and color reproduction, even in bright sunlight. In addition, Face Detection technology, Smile Shutter, and Intelligent Scene Recognition elicit stunning detail from special moments. High-resolution images can be enjoyed in 16:9 High-Resolution Mode simply by connecting the camera directly to a Sony BRAVIA HDTV or other compatible HDTV with an optional cradle for optimal HD playback. Because an off-center subject can make your shot more interesting, a 9-point auto-focus measures the focus at 9 precision points instead of 5 for a greater creative freedom to compose your image. Super SteadyShot(R) Optical Image Stabilization compensates for shaky hands and minimizes blur with optical sensors that detect camera movement and send correcting signals to a stabilization lens. Just get it 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I shoot professionally full time specializing in advertising and weddings. When I got into advertising I was unsure if this 40d would produce a big enough file to accommodate billboards. I've been proven wrong.

10.1 megapixels is sufficient for full sized billboards. For weddings, in my experience anything larger than this file size would be overkill for the type of prints wedding couples want produced.

The color accuracy has amazed me as well as the endless list of custom functions. You can truly trick this camera out to suit your individual shooting style.

The body is rugged... I don't make a habit of dropping my gear like a schmuck, but if that is your disposition then you will appreciate the magnesium alloy body.

The size fits nicely in big hands and the weight is ideal over larger cameras such as the Mark II series which I have had the pleasure of shooting with.

I will not be upgrading to the new 50d. I will instead be upgrading to the new 5d mark II once that comes out. Only for my own gluttonous reasons though.

Take my word. This beast will serve you well!

Sony T500 - I think this one is a keeper! 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I've tried just about EVERY point and shoot that takes HD Video, plus countless other digital cameras over the years. The HD P&S's I've tried are: Canon TX1, Panasonic TX5, several flash drive camcorders that also take still pic's, Sanyo HD1000 & HD700, Samsung HV24HD, and ALL the Kodak's that take HD Video. By the way - it's a good thing that the places I buy these cameras from have a good return policy or I would have been in big trouble. My wife thinks I'm obsessed; she's right! Unfortunately, all of the above cameras had some serious issues - suffice it to say, not acceptable!

My criterion is pretty simple, but not easy to find. All I really just want is a small point and shoot that takes decent wide screen (16:9) pictures and HD 720 or 1080 videos. Nothing pro - I'm reasonable - the pic'/vid's need to look decent, clear, not make me sea sick to watch on my HDTV, stay in focus, sound quality OK, able to zoom during video (and the sound not cut out - i.e. Samsung), and able to stick in my pocket. I don't care about millions of screen shot selections, smile detection, and all the other gimmicky things. My computers are all able to play the new video formats so playback is not a problem. Why is this so darn hard????? This is 2008 (almost 2009) - we should have flying cars by now - right!!! Sorry for the rant - it's just frustrating!

Anyway, I think I found what I've been looking for - at least for now. This new Sony T500 basically does it all.

I'll start with Video - all I can say is NICE. Even in dim rooms, they look pretty good - outside even better! I have a media center computer hooked up to my HDTV - they really look nice and clear. Smooth playback. Zooming is nice and the video actually seems to stay in focus. Color is nice. Stereo sound quality is clear, stable to look at even while moving (no sea sickness with this one). What can I say - it just looks good - no major complaints. The video is, I think, the real strong point for the little camera.

Now for the Pictures - I've taken some really stunning pictures. Clear, color balanced, sharp, zoom is nice. Outside/good lighting is great; inside in low light, a bit grainy - but not bad - definitely acceptable. You have to play with the settings to get good indoor pictures, again really not bad at all. Flash seems strong. Focus fast. Lag Time - no problem. Good Zoom. Simple and intuitive operation and options.

Bottom line, my other favorite camera, the Canon G7, may take better stills, but this T500 takes solid still pictures and has FAR superior video, is much smaller, and easier to schlep around.

My few grips (and it should be no deal breaker for anyone in my humble opinion) is:
1) Battery life not so hot - I had to pick up two extra batteries - no big deal really, I just throw them in my pocket and when one dies out I just replace!
2) Indoor pics are somewhat grainy and unpredictable. But all in all, I happy with the pictures. Just take several of the same indoor shots and one will be good for you.
3) Memory Cards: as with many other camera geeks out there, I really wish Sony would just give the option of using SDHCs. I have so many SD cards (ranging from the old 16 mb SD to 16 GB SDHCs. Now I can't use them! Well - I just bought a new duo 8 GB - kinda costly, but "Resistance is (was) Futile" - I had no choice!

That's about it - I really like this camera and will keep it - at least until the next Point and Shoot that looks "to good to be true" comes out!

Editorial Review:

With Sony's Smile Shutter technology, the DSCT300 helps automatically capture smiles as they happen, while Face Detection technology helps deliver accurate, natural images of family and friends. You can expect stunning detail and color thanks to its 10.1-megapixel resolution, Carl Zeiss 5x optical zoom lens, and intelligent scene recognition mode.

Powerful Little Gem 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I got the early version of this camera in Japan, sold as the IXY 3000 IS and am head over heels in love; this replaces an SD800IS which was a long time favorite. The new one got my attention for the whopping 14.7 MP as I have been using this for taking panoramas on a GigaPan rig - [...]-- and more pixels count for much there. Plus there is the full manual (focus and exposure modes). And then there was the thrill of getting a new camera a few weeks before it was available in the US.

Mine is set up with an 8GB SD HC card, which feels infinite.

I've been very happy with the quality, and I do a lot of macro shots, posting hundreds on my flickr site [...]

The new QuickShot mode is nice- to shoot through viewfinder where you want the quickest response time. And a bonus is a long overlooked feature- an on screen battery level indicator. There is a small button where you can instantly go to view mode, rather than flipping the shooting mode. Face focussing is very handy. Video quality is superb. Having the camera stitch mode (used for getting good overlap for single row panoramas) on the presets selection is great. And w00t! It uses the same NB-5L battery, so I now have more spares.

My negatives are minor- the black style is slick, but the plastic shell feels a little cheap/flimsy, but the camera is sturdy. My biggest gripe is the latch on the battery/SD card compartment comes open easily in your bag or your pocket; the one on the SD800 never popped open on its own. The latch for the USB dock too is odd, it is hard to figure out where the hinge part is, and I always feel like I am going to do it wrong and break it off.

Spinning the lower selection wheel takes some dexterity; so setting the aperture and f/stops in manual mode is going to take some time to be a smooth process.

I've never bought a camera just because it has a large resolution, but I am shooting 4416x3312, better than my first generation Digital Rebel.

I am in love with this little camera!
